As a first year student, you have all your opportunities ahead of you. If you don’t know what you want to major in or pursue as a career, the career fair is a great place to do some quick research. You’ll be able to find out what some of your favorite companies look for in an employee and what majors they need. If you do know what you plan to do, you can get your name out there! Companies offer internships and training that can provide students with valuable experience and are great resume builders.

Some Top Tips to keep in mind when career exploring:

  • Career Services on campus has awesome assessments that can help you identify your strengths and possible majors/careers for you to consider. So start exploring their website!
  • Stop by the Career Fair on March 19th & 20th, 2013. It’s so easy, even  if you only stay for half an hour. You’ll get a sense of what it’s like, what you should do next year if you are interested in finding an internship, and you’ll get to meet some recruiters who recognize your motivation as a first year student at a career fair!
  • If you are seriously hunting for a job or internship for next semester, next  summer, or next year, dress to impress. Business casual is always a respectable touch, though not required. It shows you’re serious.
  • Oh yeah, and bring copies of your resume if you want to hand it out.
  • Lastly, they hand out tons of free stuff, especially pens and tote bags. If you like free stuff, this is also a good reason to check it out! Sometimes they even have free food 🙂

The UA Enactus Career Expo is February 13, 2013 in the Student Union Third Floor Ballroom from 10 am – 3 pm. UA’s Spring Career Days is March 19 and 20, 2013 in the same place from 11-4. These are awesome opportunities to meet hundreds of recruiters from well-known companies across the country including nonprofits, healthcare, and government organizations.
