Safe Zone: Ally Development Workshop Reflection

13 Jan

Safe Zone Logo Updated 2011On Saturday, January 12, 2013 I attended the second of two Safe Zone trainings hosted by LGTBQ Affairs at the University of Arizona.  I attended the General Education Workshop last semester, and now I am officially Safe Zone trained!

Safe Zone is a 2-part program that teaches students, staff, and faculty about members of the lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, and queer communities.  The programs strive to raise awareness and educate potential allies who will help to promote equality and inclusive environments at UA.

I recommend these programs/trainings for everyone!  These workshops challenge participants to think about their own privilege and to consider how they have contributed to oppression in society … believe it or not, we have all done it.  At the end of the Ally Development Workshop we all thought of ways that we can be better allies – I am committed to following the items I wrote in that list, and I am here to support anyone who needs help or just someone to talk to.
