Spring Break Reflection

The spring break we’ve all been waiting for is finally here! It’s time to let your hair down, put your feet up, and make sure that you use your break to do yourself some favors.

The first thing on our to-do list for the break is usually to take our to-do list and throw it out the window. You deserve to cut loose and toss obligations aside, but rather than abandoning your list completely, put it in a spot for safekeeping.

Take a luxurious morning where you sleep to heart’s content only to wake up and spend three hours wandering the internet. Walk the dog, catch up with friends, take a hike, or have a picnic. Do whatever you daydream about doing on those long days indoors when classes are heavy and the weather is beautiful. This way you can feed your soul, get your bearings, and remember why you’re in school in the first place: to make your life even better than it already is.

After you’ve taken a breather, it can be really tough to motivate ourselves back to the land of homework and study. If it helps, take a look at the syllabus and you’ll see that we only have eight weeks left this semester. It will be gone before you know it, so take this time to prepare your game plan for finishing up strong.

If that’s not enough to push you forward, look at the grades you’ve received so far and do the math. Are you doing as well as you’d hoped in your classes? If so, pat yourself on the back! If not, don’t panic! There’s still time to catch up and change gears before we pass the point of no return.

Think about why you’re performing the way you are, good or bad, and make a list of things you can do to continue to improve. Maybe you need one more hour a week to study something you’ve fallen behind in, or maybe you need to get organized on the assignments and projects you have left. Perhaps you need to talk to someone about who you are and where you’re going in life to make sure you’re in the right major. If you need to step up your game, now is the time to face the music and make that last big push.

This is a great time to use campus resources to take inventory. It’s important to make sure that your tuition and bursars account are paid up. If you see your finances dwindling, make a budget and see where you can cut spending. If you need help with funding, talk to your financial aid advisor about taking out a loan, or make an arrangement with your family to get you through. It’s better to plan ahead now than it is to find yourself broke and starving during finals. Now might be the time to look over Scholarship Universe and see what funds you can wrangle for the future.

Taking care of yourself and your health will make the difference between smooth sailing and a brutal crunch at the end of your semester. You really don’t want to find your fridge empty and your meal plan dry at the last stretch, so plan accordingly. If you haven’t been feeding your brain during your long days, now is the time to start. You’d be surprised how much better your brain will perform when it has some food to fuel it. Not only will you have better focus, but you’ll feel better emotionally.

College can be maddeningly stressful. When emotions get in the way of your capacity for success, don’t bottle it up! Campus Health will be open over the break and they have plenty of professionals who are ready to hear your troubles free of charge. If you find yourself shaking in your boots when thinking of finals, try talking to CAPS (Counseling and Psych Services) about their test anxiety workshops.

Coming back to school after a week of free time and festivities can be rough. Try making a new “semester on a page” to motivate yourself at the end of the break. Planning and organizing now can be the turning point that makes the rest of your semester flow. After all of the work you’ve already done this semester, it helps to see what you have left all laid out in front of you. You know you can do this!

Get some much-deserved rest, have a ridiculous amount of fun, and spoil yourself this spring break. If you play your cards right and take care of yourself, you’ll be perfectly prepared when it comes time to Bear Down at the end of the semester!
