Pros & Cons of Online Courses

13 Nov

That matter of life is that we like things easy.

yeee

So when it comes to picking classes, I totally get it if your first instinct is to pick an online class, because I mean, it’s online. But BEFORE you decide to register for a schedule full of online courses, let me help clarify the pros and cons of an online class!

CONS:

Time management:

Since it’s an online class, you won’t have a daily in-class reminders from your instructor to get your assignments done on time. So you now have the personal responsibility to remember when your assignments are due and to actually DO them.

Procrastination:

THIS WILL BE THE BIGGEST STRUGGLE FOR THE COURSE. You just forgot about it, and now you’re SWAMPED with 3 papers to write, 2 discussion responses, and a short essay!

Professors:

Some professors don’t have in-person office hours, so asking questions is all based on emailing your professor. Some professors don’t reply for days, and others are right on it, so definitely be cautious of how to reach out to them and how to not get stuck in a freefall!

No Variation:

A lot of online courses don’t really have a varying schedule, meaning that there aren’t any ‘fun’ days. Most of the curriculum is the same, meaning that it’s all quizzes, papers, and discussions. Not ALL courses are like this, but many are. So if you’re looking for a SPICY class, it might not be exactly your cup of tea.

 PROS:

YOUR TIME

THIS CLASS REVOLVES AROUND YOUR SCHEDULE. I REPEAT, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAKE UP AT 8AM FOR THIS COURSE.

Want to get the entire module done today? You can! Want to space all your assignments out before the due date? You can!

On the Go:

YOU CAN TAKE THIS COURSE WHEREVER YOU HAVE INTERNET! Don’t worry about going home for a weekend and leaving on a Thursday! You can take your assignments with you and turn them in online!

swift

Simplicity:

YOU’LL BE DOING THE SAME KIND OF ASSIGNEMNTS. There isn’t a big variation in what you’ll be doing during the semester, but hey, if you like knowing that you’ll be writing papers and discussion posts and that’s all your grade consists of, this is for you!

Responsibility:

Regardless of what class, online courses teach you how to be responsible, to balance your time, and to ACTUALLY USE THAT PLANNER of yours!

All in all, online classes are courses that leave you with flexibility that can either benefit you or hurt you! Definitely make sure you can handle the pressure, and if you’re not sure, ask your advisor!
